Soot from an oven fire is often greasy and acidic, and it clings to nearby cabinet faces, range hood filters, and countertops in a way that regular cleaning does not fully lift. Heat can also warp countertop material near the oven or discolor cabinet finish above and to the sides, even without visible flame ever reaching those surfaces. If the smell persists after the kitchen has been aired out for a day or more, that is usually a sign residue has settled into porous surfaces like wood cabinetry, drywall, or grout.
