An extension cord or power strip is rated to carry a certain amount of current, measured in amps or watts, and printed in small text somewhere on the cord itself or its packaging. When the combined draw of everything plugged into it exceeds that rating, the internal wire has to carry more electricity than it was built for. That extra load creates heat inside the insulation. A little heat dissipates safely. Sustained heat, especially in a cord that's coiled, covered by a rug, or pinned under furniture, has nowhere to go. Over hours or days, that heat can degrade the insulation until the wires inside arc against each other or against something flammable nearby.
The habits that quietly add up to overload
Few people sit down and calculate wattage before plugging something in. Overload usually happens gradually: a power strip meant for a lamp and a phone charger ends up running a space heater too, or two extension cords get daisy-chained end to end to reach an outdoor outlet, which strips away a layer of the safety margin each cord was designed with. High-draw appliances are the usual culprits: space heaters, window AC units, hair dryers, toaster ovens, and power tools. Any of these run through a standard extension cord or power strip, especially for extended periods, puts real strain on a system built for lighter loads.
Warning signs worth checking right now
A cord or strip that's warm or hot to the touch, a faint burning or plastic smell near an outlet, discoloration or melting on the plug or the strip's casing, a breaker that trips repeatedly, or flickering lights when an appliance kicks on are all signs the circuit is working harder than it should. A power strip with a worn or frayed cord, a missing ground pin, or a cracked casing has already lost some of its protection and should be replaced rather than repaired.
What safer use actually looks like
Extension cords and power strips are meant for temporary use, not as a permanent stand-in for an outlet that isn't where you need it. Match the cord's gauge and rating to what you're plugging in, never run a cord under a rug or through a doorway where it gets pinched, avoid daisy-chaining multiple strips together, and give high-draw appliances a dedicated outlet whenever possible. If a space regularly needs more outlets than it has, that's usually a sign the wiring needs an electrician's attention rather than another power strip.

A power strip in good condition, used within its rated load, is designed to be left plugged in. The risk comes from what's connected to it and its condition, not simply the act of leaving it plugged in. Can a power strip catch fire even if nothing seems overloaded?

What should I do if I find a scorched outlet or cord?
