The risk shows up at the connections: aluminum expands and contracts with heat cycling more than copper does, it oxidizes in a way that increases electrical resistance, and it's softer, so it can loosen at screw terminals over time. A connection that starts out tight can work itself loose year after year without anyone touching it. Loose or oxidized connections create resistance, resistance creates heat, and heat at a connection point inside a wall or a switch box is how these fires start, often without tripping a breaker first.
Signs that suggest aluminum wiring may be present

The fixes that address the real risk
