Heat can also warp nearby surfaces or crack glass without ever producing visible flame damage there, which is why a fire that looks small at first glance can still leave residue and odor issues throughout a house.

Keeping candles on a stable, heat safe surface away from anything that can drift into the flame's radius, trimming the wick before each burn so it doesn't grow tall and unstable, and not leaving a candle burning in a room with no one in it are the practical habits that matter most.
