How hydroxyl generators work

Hydroxyl radicals react with odor molecules in a similar destroy-don't-mask way as ozone, but the reaction is gentler and the radicals themselves are not harmful to people, pets, plants, or most materials in the amounts produced by these machines. That means a hydroxyl generator can typically keep running in an occupied space, which matters a lot when a family or business can't just leave the building for a day or two.

When each one gets used

Ozone tends to get used for severe, deeply embedded odors, heavy smoke damage after a fire, or situations where the space can be fully vacated and sealed for a set treatment period, since it works faster on very tough odor loads but requires that clear-out. Hydroxyl generators tend to get used when people, pets, or sensitive materials need to stay in or near the space during treatment, for lighter to moderate odor situations, or as a longer, slower-running treatment that continues over days rather than hours. Neither one is simply better; the right choice depends on how bad the odor is, what caused it, and whether the space can be vacated.

Consumer-grade versions exist, but ozone in particular needs to be run at a controlled level, for a set time, in a fully vacated and sealed space, because it's unsafe to breathe and can damage certain materials with prolonged exposure. Getting the dose, timing, and ventilation wrong can mean the odor comes back or the space isn't safe to re-enter as soon as expected.

Will a hydroxyl generator remove odor as completely as ozone?

For lighter to moderate odor, hydroxyl treatment can be just as effective over a longer run time. For very heavy, deeply embedded smoke or mildew odor, ozone often works faster because the reaction is stronger, but that strength is also why it requires the space to be empty.

Does odor treatment replace the need to remove damaged materials?
