2. Drain the water lines and pan
Open the drain plug or line and let standing water empty out completely. Any water left sitting in a pan or line can freeze, expand, and crack the fitting or the pan itself.
3. Remove or inspect the pads
Wet pads left in place all winter can mold, rot, or become a nesting spot for pests. Many homeowners pull the pads entirely for winter storage; others leave them but check that they are dry before closing things up.
4. Cover the unit
A proper cooler cover keeps rain and debris out of the housing and off the motor and pump. It also blocks a surprising amount of the cold air infiltration that makes a house harder to heat in winter.
5. Close the roof or wall vents
Whatever damper or vent controls airflow into the house from the cooler should be closed for winter. This stops cold air from pouring in and stops condensation from forming inside ductwork that is no longer moving warm, dry air.
