Stick framing and trusses are not the same structural system
Traditional stick framing uses individual rafters, ceiling joists, and ridge boards, each one sized to carry the load in the section where it sits. If a section of stick framing is damaged, a carpenter can often sister in a new piece of lumber alongside the old one, or cut out a damaged span and replace it, because each rafter is doing its own independent job of carrying weight down to the walls below it. A roof truss works differently. It's a pre-engineered triangular assembly of smaller wood members (chords and webs) connected at specific points by metal gusset plates or engineered joints. The whole truss is designed as one system. Every board in it is sized based on the assumption that every other board in it is intact and doing its share of the work. Cut into one member, and you haven't just removed a piece of wood, you've changed the math the entire truss was built on.
Why 'just cut and patch it' can fail
This is the mistake that causes real problems down the road. Cutting out a damaged section of a truss chord and nailing a patch board across the gap might look fine and even hold weight for a while, but it doesn't restore the load path the truss was engineered around. Trusses transfer force through their joints and along the full length of each member. A patch that isn't sized, positioned, and fastened the way the original truss design calls for can leave the truss carrying less than its rated load, even though nothing looks wrong from the attic. The risk doesn't always show up right away. Because a truss is an engineered system, a legitimate repair usually starts with figuring out what that system was designed to carry and how the damaged member fits into it. That often means involving a structural engineer or the truss manufacturer to specify a repair detail, such as a properly sized sister member, a plated splice, or in some cases a full truss replacement rather than a repair at all. The repair itself typically has to restore both the strength of the damaged chord or web member and the connections at each end, since trusses rely on those joints as much as the wood itself. This is also why fire, water, or termite damage to a truss deserves closer inspection than the same damage in stick-built framing.
